Formula for paint, wall area and wallpaper rolls

The calculator first estimates the usable wall area. Depending on the mode, it then calculates either the paint volume or the number of wallpaper strips and rolls.

Wall paint

Formula: Liters = ((perimeter x height - openings) + ceiling) x coats / coverage

Example

41.5 m2 wall area x 2 coats / 8 m2 per liter = 10.4 liters, plus reserve.

The reserve helps with absorbent surfaces, small touch-ups and losses in the roller or bucket.

Wallpaper

Formula: Rolls = strips / strips per roll, with reserve

Example

The room perimeter is divided by roll width. Room height plus pattern repeat determines how many strips can be cut from one roll.

Pattern repeat can noticeably reduce the usable number of strips per roll.

  • Room dimensions: Length, width and height define the room perimeter and the gross wall area.
  • Doors and windows: Openings are subtracted from the gross area because they do not need paint or wallpaper.
  • Coats and pattern repeat: Additional coats increase paint demand; wallpaper repeat can change strip length and waste.
  • Coverage: The manufacturer coverage value in square meters per liter determines the estimated liters.

Formula & logic

Calcolaro first calculates the net area from room perimeter, height, openings and optional ceiling. In paint mode, this area is multiplied by the number of coats and divided by coverage. In wallpaper mode, strips, roll length, pattern repeat and reserve are evaluated.

How is paint consumption calculated?

Paint consumption is calculated from the net wall area divided by the coverage of the paint in square meters per liter. The result is then multiplied by the number of coats. Windows and doors are subtracted first; a 10 percent reserve is included for losses, absorbent surfaces and small touch-ups.

Should I subtract windows and doors from the wall area?

Yes, large windows and doors should be subtracted because those areas do not need paint or wallpaper. For very small openings the difference is often minor, but the subtraction improves the shopping estimate when several windows or large balcony doors are involved.

How many coats are usually needed?

On bright, well-prepared walls, high-quality paint may cover with one coat. Dark old paint, absorbent surfaces, stains or cheaper paint usually make two coats more realistic. Very strong color changes may require three coats.

For wallpaper, wall area alone is not enough. Room perimeter, roll width, roll length, room height and pattern repeat all matter. The repeat increases the required strip length and can reduce how many strips fit on each roll.

What affects paint consumption the most?

What is opacity class?

Opacity is often classified from 1 to 4 under European paint standards. Class 1 means very high hiding power; class 4 means low hiding power. The lower the hiding power and the stronger the color change, the more likely you should plan two or more coats.

Do I need primer before painting?

Primer is useful on very absorbent, sandy, chalky or unevenly absorbent surfaces. A suitable primer can reduce paint demand, improve adhesion and make the finish more even. Always check the recommendations of the paint or primer manufacturer.

How should I store leftover paint?

Paint should be stored cool, frost-free and tightly sealed. Leftovers last longer when there is little air in the container and no dirty tools have been dipped into the bucket. If paint smells bad or has clumps, do not use it anymore.

Can I mix old paint leftovers?

Only mix paints of the same type, for example emulsion paint with emulsion paint. Silicate paint, lime paint and emulsion paint are not freely interchangeable. Self-mixed shades are hard to reproduce later, so mix enough for the full area.

Work wet on wet and paint connected areas without long pauses. Roll the paint evenly and avoid pressing too hard, so the finish stays consistent and the estimated amount remains realistic.
