Lux describes how much light reaches a surface. The calculator multiplies area and target lux, adds a surface factor and then converts the light output into a rough LED power estimate.

Formula for the base requirement: Lumens = area in m2 x target lux

Concrete example calculation for ambient lighting

20 m2 living room x 100 lux = 2,000 lumens base requirement.

20 m2 at 100 lux gives 2,000 lumens.

Practical requirement

Formula with surface factor: Recommended lumens = base requirement x surface factor

Concrete example calculation with surface factor

15 m2 home office x 500 lux = 7,500 lumens. With mixed surfaces: 7,500 x 1.15 = 8,625 lumens.

Darker rooms are calculated with a higher factor.

LED watts

Formula for LED power: LED watts = recommended lumens / lumens per watt

Concrete example calculation for LED watts

2,700 lumens / 90 lm/W = 30 watts of LED power.

At 90 lm/W, 2,700 lumens correspond to about 30 watts of LED power.

  • Room area: The larger the area, the more total light output is needed for the same lux value.
  • Target lux: Living areas need less lux than work surfaces, mirrors or desks.
  • Reflection: Dark surfaces reflect less light and increase the practical requirement.
  • LED efficacy: Modern LEDs are often roughly between 80 and 120 lumens per watt.

Formula & Logic

The lumens room calculator calculates light output from area times desired illuminance in lux. Then it applies a surface factor for light, mixed or dark rooms. LED power is calculated from lumens divided by lumens per watt.

Assumptions

  • The room area corresponds to the actual floor area to be lit.
  • The selected lux value describes the desired average illuminance.
  • LED efficacy is an average value; specific lamps can differ from it.

Known limitations

  • Beam angle, fixture position, room height, lampshades and glare are not simulated individually.
  • Dark walls, high ceilings or strongly absorbing furniture can require more light output.
  • Commercial workplaces have more binding lighting requirements than private living spaces.

More lumens are not automatically better. Distribution, light color, dimming, glare control and the right lux value for the room use are decisive.

Compare modern LED lamps by lumens instead of old watt values. An earlier 60-watt incandescent bulb roughly corresponds to 800 lumens.

Several light sources often feel more pleasant than one very bright lamp, especially in living rooms, kitchen work surfaces, mirrors and desks.

Frequently asked questions about lumens and lux

What is the difference between lumens and lux?

Lumens (lm) describe the total light output of a lamp. Lux (lx) describes how much light reaches a surface. For simple room planning: lumens = square meters x lux.

How many lumens do I need for a living room?

For comfortable ambient lighting, about 100 to 150 lux is often a useful starting point. A 20 m2 room therefore needs roughly 2,000 to 3,000 lumens before surface and fixture losses.

Why does a home office need more light?

Reading, writing and working require more illuminance than cozy living-room lighting. Desks and other work surfaces often use 300 to 500 lux, ideally supplemented by a direct desk lamp.

Are more lumens always better?

No. Too much light can cause glare, feel harsh or make a room uncomfortable. Distribution, color temperature, fixture position, dimming and glare control matter as much as total lumens.

How do I convert old watt values to lumens?

A traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb is roughly comparable to about 800 lumens. Modern LEDs often reach that brightness with about 8 to 10 watts, so lumens are the better value to compare.
