The estimate starts with home size and then adjusts for household type, number of people, storage rooms, books, kitchen items and clothing. Furniture volume is estimated separately because boxes are only part of the real moving volume.

Calcolaro adds a 15 percent loading reserve when estimating trips. This matters because furniture, boxes, plants, bicycles and bulky items rarely stack perfectly inside a van.

Formula for boxes, volume and van trips

The calculator combines practical box-per-area assumptions with adjustments for people, storage areas, books, kitchen items and clothing. The result is a planning estimate for box count, transport volume and required trips.

Base boxes

Formula: Boxes = home area x household factor x person factor x storage factor

Example

80 m2 x 0.9 x 1.10 = 79.2 base boxes for an average two-person household.

The household factor ranges from 0.6 boxes/m2 for minimalist households to 1.5 boxes/m2 for very many belongings.

Transport volume

Formula: Volume = standard boxes x 0.08 m3 + book boxes x 0.05 m3 + wardrobe boxes x 0.25 m3 + furniture volume

Example

70 standard boxes, 15 book boxes, 4 wardrobe boxes and 9.6 m3 furniture volume produce about 16.95 m3 transport volume.

Boxes are only part of moving volume. Furniture, shelves, plants and bulky items can increase the required space noticeably.

Trips

Formula: Trips = round up(transport volume x 1.15 / van size)

Example

16.95 m3 x 1.15 / 10 m3 = 1.95, so 2 trips with a 10 m3 van.

The 15% reserve accounts for poor stackability, load securing and cargo volume that cannot be used perfectly.

Formula & logic

Home size and household type first produce a base box count. Additional people, basement or attic storage, book share, kitchen and clothing adjust that estimate. For transport volume, standard boxes, book boxes, wardrobe boxes and furniture volume are added. For trips, total volume is multiplied by a 15 percent reserve and divided by the selected van size.

Assumptions

  • Standard moving boxes are estimated at about 0.08 m3.
  • Book boxes are estimated smaller because books and files become heavy quickly.

Known limitations

Calculation: 150 x 1.2 x 1.30 = 234 base boxes. About 66 book boxes, 183 standard boxes including kitchen and 12 wardrobe boxes. Furniture volume: 150 x 0.16 = 24 m3.

Plan van size, boxes and moving helpers

A larger van can save trips, but only if parking space, license, loading height and loading situation fit the move.

With little furniture and short distances, a smaller van with several trips can be cheaper and more flexible. For long distances or many helpers, a larger vehicle is often more useful.

Plan boxes with a reserve. Shortly before moving day, storage boxes, tools, decorations, files and closet items often appear that were not counted before.

Typical mistakes

Which box sizes should I plan for?
